Regular doctor visits are important to make sure you and your baby are safe and healthy during your pregnancy. At each appointment we will measure your weight, check your urine, monitor your blood pressure, and check your baby’s heart rate. A screening ultrasound will be done at 18-22 weeks. Follow-up ultrasounds will be done as necessary to evaluate your baby’s growth or health.
During pregnancy, you know that your choice of foods affects your baby. We monitor your weight gain and discuss with you some things you can do to help make sure you gain the appropriate amount of weight during your pregnancy. We monitor your blood pressure at every visit to detect pre-existing hypertension or early signs of pre-eclampsia.
Most women know the signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI) include pain/burning with urination or frequency of urination. Pregnancy can be confusing in this regard because it is normal during pregnancy to have urinary frequency. The signs of a urinary tract infection when you are pregnant often do not include painful urination. Often there are no signs of a urinary tract infection at all, but sometimes the only sign is the feel of the urge to urinate, but not having much to eliminate. That is why we are vigilant about checking your urine for infection at every prenatal visit. Your urine will be screened at every visit for white blood cells to detect signs of infection.
In addition your urine will be checked for glucose to detect severe diabetes and for protein to detect pre-eclampsia or kidney disease. If a high risk condition exists or arises, you can be sure that you are in good hands with Dr. Ensley. He and his team will make sure that you get all the appropriate screening and treatment needed to make yours a healthy and happy pregnancy.
When that special time comes, you’ll take comfort in knowing that Dr. Ensley will be right there with you. In fact, those 3:00 a.m. calls to come to the hospital still fill him with excitement. He’s deeply honored to be a part of this most important, life–changing time in your and your family’s life. He is proud to be able to help make yours a successful delivery.
